Andrew was educated, trained and qualified as a Clinical Psychologist with a focus in person centered psychotherapy under the clinical supervision of Dr Noboru Hozumi and the educational supervision of Dr Akihisa Kondo. In 2003 he became the only non-Japanese mental health professional to be awarded qualification as a registered Psychotherapist in Japan by the Japanese Federation for Psychotherapy.
He uses an integrative approach in counseling and psychotherapy, combining person centered (PCP) psychotherapy, cognitive therapy (CT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to assist each individual client find effective solutions in their own terms to the specific problems they are facing. His extensive experience in mental health care clinics, counseling centers and local government health center and private mental health care daycare facilities in Tokyo includes working with people experiencing unreasonable levels of stress and anxiety, anxiety disorders, panic attacks, panic disorder, depression, major depression abuse, domestic violence,traumatic stress, PTSD, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
He also specializes in providing effective individual couples and marriage counseling and psychotherapy for people experiencing unreasonable stress, anger management problems, anxiety disorders (such as social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder), depression, alcohol and substance abuse, trauma, domestic violence, childhood abuse and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
As a qualified JFP Psychotherapist and a qualified JSCCP Clinical Psychologist he is experienced in providing coordinated psychological and social support to clients in both English and Japanese in teamwork with the client's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare nationally licensed psychiatrist. He has extensive experience of working with individuals, couples and families in crisis, including supporting people who are feeling their situation is hopeless, suffering from extreme anxiety, confusion, and depression and having thoughts of suicide.
