Helmut is a German born New Zealander who completed his master's degree in health science at the Auckland University of Technology. His approach is grounded in depth psychology. He applies cognitive therapy techniques and proactive interventions according to what is most appropriate to the client's circumstances.

Approach and Background

Helmut is a German born New Zealander who completed his master’s degree in health science at the Auckland University of Technology. His approach is grounded in depth psychology. He applies cognitive therapy techniques and proactive interventions according to what is most appropriate to the client’s circumstances.

Helmut received clinical training working in a variety of settings including a gambling addiction centre, a community mental health centre, a University psychotherapy clinic, and a telephone crisis line. Helmut underwent learning analysis in individual as well as group psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He received additional further supervision in transpersonal psychology. In private practice he has offered intensive psychoanalytically oriented therapy, as well as provided supportive therapy for people experiencing mental crisis.

Specialization

Helmut enjoys all area of counseling and therapy work. The majority of people he sees have a combination of interrelated problems involving stress and difficulty in a work or relationship situation. Often, just below the surface, lies a history of depression, low or anxious mood and this serves to compound the current situation. Frequently encountered diagnoses include generalized anxiety disorder, social or specific phobias, depression, adjustment disorders associated with personal loss, and personality disorder traits. His experience with Japan goes back more than 20 years and he uses English or Japanese. He understands, but is not a confident speaker of, German.
